A statistical study of the location and motion of the HF radar cusp

چکیده
The large-scale and continuous monitoring of the ionospheric cusp region offered by HF radars has been exploited in order to examine the statistical location and motion of the equatorward edge of the HF radar cusp as a function of the upstream IMF BZ component. Although a considerable scatter is seen, both parameters have a clear influence from the north-south component of the IMF. Excellent agreement is achieved with previous observations from low altitude spacecraft data. The HF radar cusp region is seen to migrate equatorward at a rate of 0.02 min−1 nT−1 under IMF BZ south conditions, but remains static for IMF BZ north. The motion of the cusp implies an addition of magnetic flux of ∼ 2 × 104 Wb s−1 nT−1 under IMF BZ south conditions, equivalent to a reconnection voltage of 20 kV nT−1, which is consistent with previous estimates from case studies on both the dayside and nightside regions.

متن کاملStatistical observations of the MLT, latitude and size of pulsed ionospheric ̄ows with the CUTLASS Finland radar
A study has been performed on the occurrence of pulsed ionospheric ̄ows as detected by the CUTLASS Finland HF radar. These ̄ows have been suggested as being created at the ionospheric footprint of newly-reconnected ®eld lines, during episodes of magnetic ̄ux transfer into the terrestrial magnetosphere ( ̄ux transfer events or FTEs). Two years of both hightime resolution and normal scan data from...
متن کاملA statistical survey of dayside pulsed ionospheric ̄ows as seen by the CUTLASS Finland HF radar
Nearly two years of 2-min resolution data and 7to 21-s resolution data from the CUTLASS Finland HF radar have undergone Fourier analysis in order to study statistically the occurrence rates and repetition frequencies of pulsed ionospheric ̄ows in the noon-sector high-latitude ionosphere. Pulsed ionospheric ̄ow bursts are believed to be the ionospheric footprint of newly reconnected geomagnetic ...
متن کاملClimatology of GPS phase scintillation and HF radar backscatter for the high-latitude ionosphere under solar minimum conditions
Maps of GPS phase scintillation at high latitudes have been constructed after the first two years of operation of the Canadian High Arctic Ionospheric Network (CHAIN) during the 2008–2009 solar minimum. CHAIN consists of ten dual-frequency receivers, configured to measure amplitude and phase scintillation from L1 GPS signals and ionospheric total electron content (TEC) from L1 and L2 GPS signal...
متن کاملMultiple Target Tracking With a 2-D Radar Using the JPDAF Algorithm and Combined Motion Model
Multiple target tracking (MTT) is taken into account as one of the most important topics in tracking targets with radars. In this paper, the MTT problem is used for estimating the position of multiple targets when a 2-D radar is employed to gather measurements. To do so, the Joint Probabilistic Data Association Filter (JPDAF) approach is applied to tracking the position of multiple targets. To ...
